Event Set to Transform the Future of Inclusive Dance

The Dance Transformations symposium next week (Wednesday 19th October) is inviting dance artists, mentors, teachers, researchers, project managers and arts leaders across the UK to get involved directly with shaping and influencing future inclusive dance work. Presented by Blue Eyed Soul Dance Company in conjunction with Coventry University’s ICELab and with the support of DanceXchange (dx), the event is part of Dance Transformations, a two-year inclusive artist-led development programme in the West Midlands, for emerging dance artists to explore choreographic ideas. The programme explores important questions about the experience of disabled and non-disabled dance artists, and gives insight into creative and practical approaches needed.

Dance Transformations is part of Dancing for the Games which is inspired by London 2012 and part of the Cultural Olympiad in the West Midlands. It has been funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to help build a lasting cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as Arts Council England and Advantage West Midlands. Dance Transformations has been granted the Inspire mark by the London 2012 Inspire programme.

The varied programme of the symposium day includes showings of interim film and research, live work in progress presentations by Dance Transformations artists, a World Café offering opportunity to contribute ideas and debate current issues and networking opportunities.

A panel of experts in the field of inclusive dance will also take part in the day to stimulate thought about the broader context for inclusive dance in the UK. The finalised panel comprises Luke Pell, Head of Learning and Development, Candoco Dance Company; Lisa Craddock, Programme Manager, Professional Development, Foundation for Community Dance; Louise Portlock, Education Associate, Gloucestershire Dance and Rita Marcalo, Artistic Director, Instant Dissidence.
Also speaking at the event is Naomi Temple, Programme Manager for Dancing for the Games, who said: “It’s fantastic that through Dance Transformations, which is a Dancing for the Games project and part of the Cultural Olympiad in the West Midlands, emerging dance artists are having the chance to explore choreographic ideas and to connect with London 2012. The Symposium will be a great opportunity for Blue Eyed Soul to share the unique processes and methods used in the project, as well as some of the work itself, with dance artists, teachers, researchers, project managers and arts leaders.”
